How does therapy work?
Although our approach may differ based upon the therapeutic model in use, generally therapy involves a series of fifty minute sessions between yourself and Dr Goldthorpe. There will be at least one initial assessment session, where Dr Goldthorpe will spend time getting to know more about you, your concerns, and what you would like help with. Following this, we will agree together the best course of action moving forwards.
Dr Goldthorpe will prepare an agenda to guide each therapy session, however he will also be guided by your wishes and needs. Therapy sessions are generally an informative and reflective space, and may include working through worksheets as well as being set tasks to complete outside of sessions. Progress will be at a pace that is comfortable for you, and we will take time early in our sessions together to personalise our therapy sessions to your needs.
What types of therapy do you provide?
Dr Goldthorpe is an integrative psychologist, which means that he regularly draws upon different therapeutic models in his work. Examples of some of the therapies he draws upon include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness.
Are my sessions confidential?
Dr Goldthorpe keeps both written and electronic notes about you and your sessions over the course of your therapy. These notes are confidential and will generally not be shared with anyone you do not wish for them to be shared with. The only time this will not be the case is if he is required to pass this information on by law, such as if he is seriously concerned about your wellbeing or risk to yourself or other people around you.
Dr Goldthorpe also receives regular supervision, where he will discuss clients he is working with to ensure he is providing the best possible support. He will not however divulge any personally identifiable information during this supervision.
When are sessions available?
Therapy sessions are generally held on weekday evenings – Please contact us for our current availability.
How does online therapy work?
Online therapy is in many ways similar to face-to-face therapy. We use Skype as our main online platform, which allows us to see and hear each other. This platform also enables us to complete worksheets together and watch selected material as required. Skype can be used on most computers, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones, and can be set up in most cases in a matter of minutes. Online therapy does not require advanced IT skills, as links for each session will be emailed to you in advance of each session which you simply click on to join the call. This does however require you to have both a functioning webcam and speaker (most laptops, tablets, and phones have these in-built), and a private space where you can talk openly.
